Gordon Banks famous save against Pele at the 1970 World Cup has been described as the most remarkable of all time by former Arsenal goalkeeper and close friend Bob Wilson. It was announced on Tuesday morning thatEngland legend Banks had passed away peacefully overnight at the age of 81.3
RIP Gordon Banks:
- Peter Shiltons emotional tribute to fellow England legend He was my hero
- David Seaman: He was a true gentleman
- Gascoigne, Sterling and Hurst among many to pay tribute to Gordon Banks
Banks will arguably be remembered more for one save than for his World Cup-winning heroics for England in 1966, his six FIFA World Goalkeeper of Year awards or his two League Cup wins with Leicester City and Stoke City. That save came in Mexico in 1970, in a World Cup group stage game against Brazil, where he thwarted one of the games most famous stars Pele.Wilson admits he has analysed that stop about a million times, and believes it is the greatest save ever made in the history of football.3
As well as helping the #ThreeLions to glory in 1966, Gordon will be remembered for THAT save against Brazil four years later. A true England legend pic.twitter.com/RTDZKaMKBt— England (@England) February 12, 2019Ive analysed this a million times, he then has about nine yards to cover. He covered about four and a half yards with his feet, and by that moment Pele is already heading it. The fortunate thing for Banksy is that he headed into the ground and not straight at the goal. But by then Banksy is only half way across his goal and then hes dived backwards, and it was like an equal and opposite reaction with his arm – as the ball just came up off the ground to enter the net, Bansky has got to it and conjured the ball over.It remains the most remarkable save of all time and it will be shown hundreds of times today, as it should be.Here was a guy who set new standards and who was, on and off the field, an absolute legend and a wonderful human being. He was the most amazing man and I am so sad today.3
