Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to make Paul Pogba the clubs new captain in an attempt to convince the midfielder to remain at Old Trafford.ESPN claim Pogba is one of the leading candidates to land the captaincy, with the position vacant following the news that Antonio Valencia will leave this summer after the club chose not to trigger a one-year extension on his contract.1

Ashley Young, who signed a new one-year deal back in February, is in line to take over from Valencia as club captain, but with the 33-year-old set for a reduced role in the playing squad, the on-pitch captain position is up for grabs.And Solskjaer is reportedly prepared to hand 26-year-old Pogba, who was stripped of captaincy duties during Jose Mourinhos tenure, more responsibility to end speculation over his future.Pogba, 26, is open to a move away from Old Trafford with United missing out on a place in next years Champions League having finished sixth in the Premier League.Real Madrid are leading the race for his signature, but ESPN further claim that United sources have notified them that the World Cup winner, who has a contract until 2022, will not be sold this summer. Solskjaer is set to oversee a huge summer overhaul of his squad, with at least one midfielder believed to be on his wishlist following Ander Herreras departure to Paris Saint-Germain.His first signing as United boss is likely to be Swansea winger Daniel James, with the Wales international closing in on a 15m to Old Trafford after an impressive campaign in the Championship.
